Emilio Sanchez Foundation
ARTstor is collaborating with the Emilio Sanchez Foundation to share 79 images of works by the Cuban-born American artist Emilio Sanchez in the Digital Library. Born in CamagŁey, Cuba, Emilio Sanchez (1921–1999) began his artistic training at the Art Students League in 1944 and spent most of his career in New York City. He is best known for paintings and prints that depict the play of light and shadow on architectural structures. Sanchez stripped buildings of extraneous details, creating simplified forms that captured the essence of architectural structures through bold lines and vibrant colors. Sanchez also explored light and compositional structure through non-architectural themes, such as still lifes and landscapes. Internationally renowned, Sanchez has had more than 60 solo exhibitions and many group exhibitions around the world. His works are represented in numerous private and public collections, including: Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gardens (Smithsonian Institution), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The Emilio Sanchez Foundation a nonprofit organization that preserves and promotes the legacy of the artist Emilio Sanchez through research, exhibitions, and publications. Created by the artist's will, the foundation preserves an archive, which documents the life and career of the artist through personal papers, sketchbooks, personal journals, and photographs. The foundation also maintains an extensive art collection of oil paintings and works on paper, all by the artist. The images and cataloging information to be displayed in the Digital Library have been provided by the foundation.
