The Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill has contributed nearly 5,000 images from its global permanent collection to the Artstor Digital Library. The selection in Artstor provides generous representation of the collection across diverse curatorial departments.

Established in 1958, the Ackland Art Museum is one of North Carolina’s premier cultural institutions, with more than 18,000 objects in its permanent collection. It is recognized for its holdings of Asian, African, and ancient art, and decorative arts from Europe and the Americas, notably glass from the 1880s through the 1950s. Further, the modern and contemporary collections reflect diversity with works by Émile Bonnard, Man Ray, Robert Frank, Jacob Lawrence, Fairfield Porter, Anthony Caro, Nam June Paik, Anish Kapoor, Felrath Hines, Adrian Piper, Do-Ho Suh, and Carrie Mae Weems. Functional pottery and outsider art from North Carolina demonstrate the region’s own rich artistic traditions.

In keeping with a founding mission statement, the Museum acquires objects because of their quality and ability to convey the breadth of human achievement in the visual arts. This encyclopedic ambition has generated a substantial collection well-suited to its diverse communities.
